| Navassa Rain Garden Plantings: |
Navassa is taking steps to educate its citizens on the importance of stormwater management. The town hosted a rain garden planting and litter sweep on April 24, 2010. Over thirty citizens participated in the event that was followed by a cookout. The event is part of the town's efforts to improve stormwater management and promote environmental stewardship. The Brunswick Soil and Water Conservation District donated a rain barrel that was installed at the Town Hall to serve as an educational resource. The rain barrel will help capture stormwater runoff from the roof to be used to water the rain garden on an ongoing basis. The citizens also participated in the North Carolina Department of Transportation's Big Sweep litter clean up by removing trash from local roadways. Check out the pictures below.
Because Navassa, like most municipalities in our region, is located along the Cape Fear River, it is vital that area residents become aware of the damage that everyday activities such as washing a car on a driveway or over fertilizing their lawn can have on our local water supply. Water quality affects everyone in the Cape Fear Region because most municipal water systems get their drinking water from our local waterways. The town hopes that with increased knowledge of how stormwater runoff affects the local estuaries, ecosystems, and drinking water individuals will modify their behaviors to help protect our valuable natural resources.

Due to the success of the first rain garden planting the Town of Navassa held a second ran garden event on October 9, 2010. Lowe's Home Improvement Store donated landscaping supplies and a rain barrel that was installed at the the Town Hall to serve as an educational resource. Dan Bowman with Bowman's Best Lawncare also donated his landscaping expertise to help with the event. Check out the pictures below.
